Sewing Circle Sessions
Girls' Club presents an informal series of Sewing Circles - artist-centric events that bring the community together to create, ideate or progress work using fiber-based materials. Each session is led by an artist in the current exhibit Loose Threads at Girls’ Club, and will focus on a topic of their choice. Artists and community members are invited to join us and learn about different fiber-based techniques or work on their own fiber-based works-in-progress.
Sewing Circle Sessions are presented in conjunction with the exhibit Loose Threads, on view March 20 - June 19, 2026.
Loose Threads brings together fibrous works from the collection of Francie BIshop Good and David Horvitz created from and inspired by fiber, thread, and fabric. Works are made with various techniques including crochet, embroidery, weaving, needlepoint, collage, paint, pencil and knitting.
Featuring work by Alissa Alfonso, Ghada Amer, Jessica Campbell, Karla Caprali, Autumn Casey, Genevieve Cohn, Gianna DiBartolomeo, Marina Font, Jacin Giordano, Moira Holohan, Mel Kadel, Karelle Levy, Kandy Lopez, Jillian Mayer, Aurora Molina, Kerry Phillips, Evelyn Politzer, Elaine Reichek, Jonathan Rockford, Carrie Sieh, Shinique Smith, Frances Trombly and Yvonne Wells.
June 5, 2026, 11am-1pm with Kandy Lopez
In this session, Kandy Lopez will showcase her unique fiber painting process - often referred to as free hand embroidery or experimental fiber work. Participants should bring their in-progress or newly started works in crochet, sewing, embroidery, knit, weave or other media. Working alongside each other, the group will engage in open conversations, getting to know each other and sharing techniques.
Kandy G Lopez (b. 1987, New Jersey) is a multidisciplinary portrait artist exploring cultural identity, representation, and power through fiber, painting, glass, and mixed media. Born to Dominican parents, she draws from her experience navigating multiple cultural landscapes.
Saturday, June 6, 2026, 11am-1pm with Aurora Molina
This immersive sewing circle invites participants to explore thread as a drawing tool through mark-making and the delicate technique of Luneville embroidery with artist Aurora Molina. Inspired by line, memory, and gesture, the workshop transforms embroidery into a contemporary language of storytelling and observation. Participants will experiment with projected shadows, translucent fabrics, and stitched line work to create layered textile drawings. Using materials such as silk organza, tulle, and netting, participants will explore how thread can appear to float across space.
No prior embroidery experience is necessary.
Aurora Molina is a Miami-based fiber artist working across embroidery, sculpture, and installation. Her textile-based practice explores memory, migration, visibility, and collective narratives through socially engaged and community-driven projects. Founder of Red Thread Art Studio + co-founder of FAMA.
Friday, June 12, 2026, 11am-1pm with Kerry Phillips
In this session, Kerry Phillips invites artists to paint with wool and take a stab at needle felting. Felting is an ancient non-woven process of creating fabric from animal fibers using agitation to interlock the fibers in an irreversible way.
Needle felting is a fun satisfying process that uses a repetitive poking technique to “paint" with wool. Felting requires no advance knowledge, is remarkably easy to learn and infinitely adaptable in the creation of images and forms.
During this workshop participants will create felted images on a backing fabric and learn how the same process can be used to create small sculptural forms.
Kerry Phillips is an installation artist whose artwork borders on performance and social practice. Phillips’ work with found objects is intuitive, often site-specific, and steeped in remembrance and storytelling. She uses common objects in unexpected ways, working collaboratively with viewer-participants to reveal an exchange of value, the importance and limitations of memory, and the vitality of play.
