Florida Book Awards // 2012 Call for Submissions
The Florida Book Awards exists for one purpose–to honor the best work written by Florida authors and about Florida culture in the previous year. Begun in 2006, the Florida Book Awards is the most comprehensive state book awards program in the United States, and the only one with a Spanish Language category. The successes and growth the Florida Book Awards have enjoyed in the last six years are testimony to the quality of authorship and the rich culture of books that exists and continues to prosper in the Sunshine State.
2012 Florida Book Awards competition is now open. Entries should be received by 5:00 PM December 1, 2012.
Since we started the Florida Book Awards in 2006, many Florida authors whose books fall outside of our regular eight categories, and particularly the scores of non-fiction writers at Florida’s institutions of higher education who author books on non-Florida subjects, have asked us to develop new categories of competition for which their books would be recognized.
Beginning with competition for books published in 2012, we are initiating a new category to be called “General Nonfiction.” It will include all nonfiction books not about Florida. All authors must be Florida residents, as defined elsewhere on this website.
Books fitting this category should be written in English for a general audience (i.e., without academic jargon).
Submissions can be from the following broad areas:
- “Science and Technology” (including the natural sciences, mathematics and applied sciences)
- “Humanities” (including philosophy, religion, language, arts, literature, rhetoric, biographies, and history)
- “Social Sciences” (including psychology, statistics, sociology, anthropology, geography, political science, economics, law, education, public administration, social services, communications, commerce, and folklore.
- Reference books, bibliographies, textbooks, or edited anthologies are not eligible.
