Margery Gordon, a freelance journalist and art critic, will moderate a discussion about the opportunities afforded by artist residencies. Panelists will share their experiences coordinating and participating in artist residencies, their tips for potential applicants, and ways that people in the broader art community can get involved with such programs.

Kathleen Carignan, Executive Director of LegalArt, will lead the workshop, drawing on her experience both reviewing applications for LegalArt’s new live/work residency program in downtown Miami and writing grants for nonprofit organizations. She will advise participants on how to navigate the process of applying for artist residencies and make the most of their experiences onsite, and then respond to more specific questions from individual participants about applications in progress.
 
Kathleen is the Executive Director at LegalArt in Miami, Florida.  LegalArt provides artists with legal assistance, professional education and a live/work residency program.  Kathleen was formerly Director of Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (PVLA) and an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University teaching Law and the Arts. Kathleen earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia, School of Law. While in law school she worked for the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression and the Virginia Capital Representation Resource Center. In addition she was an actress for 15 years before deciding to pursue her public interest work full time. She is currently in the process of writing I’m an Artist, Now What? a book for artists on legal and professional issues and is working on her second novel.
