Mod Weekend takes over Fort Lauderdale Beach with events, tours and parties
This March, for three days only, Tropic Magazine, along with North Beach Village, Classic Gateway Cinema, Girls’ Club and the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale will present Mod Weekend 2013 as a celebration of the city’s Mid-Century Modern treasures.
Six Buildings You Need to Know: Tropics Double-Decker Bus Tour
Saturday + Sunday, 10am – 12:30pm
Take the city of Fort Lauderdale by storm with double-decker bus tours that will stop and have private tours of five of Lauderdale’s Mid-Century Modern landmarks, from a prized building by architect Dan Duckham, to an early skyscraper by Igor Polevitzky to a Polynesian palace by Charles McKirahan and more. Eco-Sensitive Boat Tour

Private, relaxed electric boat tour and lunch, provided by Las Olas’ Eten, that will both point out Mid-Century buildings of import that can be seen from Fort Lauderdale’s extensive waterways, and explain the city’s system of “finger island” construction. Architecture + Design Film Festival

Beach Blanket Babylon
Saturday + Sunday, 10am – 3pm
On the beach in the heart of North Beach Village, a rapidly reviving area of the city filled with Mid-Century hotels and apartments, there will be two days of celebration, with vintage automobile show, Mid-Century antique market, and guided tours by open-air electric taxi to show off the Village and its recent progress. Pop-up galleries will be featured at the yet-to-be opened Tranquilo Hotel, showcasing original work by photographer Robin Hill, and additional shows including one entitled Place Postage Here which will cover an entire suite with antique postcards and offer up, magnifying glasses for the viewing pleasure of guests.
At night, North Beach Village will show period classic movies in two locations and both the Plaza Bistro and the new Village Café and Wine Bar will be open to serve guests. For those traveling from out of town, or who just want to stay on the beach for night, Traquilo, Aqua and Royal Palms will be offering a special, discounted rate for one, two or three nights.
Closing Party: Tiki Madness at the World Famous Mai Kai
Sunday, 8pm
To end the weekend with a bang, the world-famous Mai Kai in Oakland Park will host an evening cocktail party with a 1950s Tiki theme.
