Girls’ Club at PULSE Contemporary Art Fair
Tuesday – Sunday, December 4 – 9, 2012
In conjunction with the Girls’ Club exhibition Following the Line, Girls’ Club presents an site-specific installation featuring canvas paintings and wall drawings by Miami artist Julie Davidow at PULSE Miami, 1400 N. Miami Avenue.
Davidow’s work seeks to establish order through the mapping of multiple visual cues of biological, botanical, geologic, cartographic, and architectural influences. These cues include specific, compositional “samples” of both the architecture of contemporary art museums and the contemporary art within these structures.
Through the use of the drawn line, the installation seeks to diagram the space upon which the physical painting is exhibited. The diagram is a two-dimensional geometric, symbolic, yet abstract representation of information. In this application – the diagram becomes a graph, or a map of the booth. In the spirit of Sol Lewitt, these wall drawings, executed on-site at Pulse only days before the fair opens to the public, exist only for the duration of the exhibition. They are then destroyed, giving the work an ephemeral quality in its physical form.
Julie Davidow is a visual artist living in Miami. Davidow received a BS from UNF, Jacksonville in 1986 and studied painting at New World School of the Arts in Miami from 1996-1999. Her work has been included in exhibitions nationwide including the Miami Art Museum; The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; the Tampa Museum of Art; and SECCA, Winston-Salem, NC. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Miami Art Museum and the Girl’s Club Collection in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
