Odalis will lead participants in the creation of a collage workshop using magazine clippings, illustrations and other source material.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Odalis Valdivieso is a Miami-based artist who experiments with photography to go beyond its own discourse to a broader notion of the medium in the expanded field, focusing on the points of intersection between urban landscapes and spatial analysis. Odalis received an MA in Photography from The RCA, London, UK and was a winner of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Grant in 2004. She was part of Talking Head Transmitters, an experimental low – frequency radio, airing at 88.3 MHz FM from 2005 until 2010.  Her work is included in numerous public and private collections and has recently been featured in the exhibitions as Practices Remain, Norwegian Wood Building, Miami, FL, SET, Bridge Red Studios – Project Space, North Miami, FL, Noise Field, Dorsch Gallery, Miami, FL, and New Work Miami, Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL.  She is currently part of the project The Nightclub, an art project, that fosters a network of artists and cultural producers in a one night art venue.

Ania Moussawel

Artist Talk | 7pm, Friday, June 1, 2012 | free and open to the public
Workshop | 1-4pm, Saturday, June 2, 2012 | $30

Ania will lead participants in the creation of traditional cyanotypes or “blueprints” and will experiment with this process by making photograms and photographic prints using digital negatives. Participants should bring small objects that have interesting, recognizable shapes and textures such as lace or netting for making photograms. Varying opacities in the objects/textures will help create a range of tones. To make photographic cyanotypes, participants can use prepared digital negatives that will be available at the workshop. Participants can also use their own images by emailing 4-5 images ahead of time to [email protected] Images should be full resolution jpegs. For the best results, the images chosen for cyanotypes should have a range of tones from light to dark.

Ania Moussawel is a Miami-born artist working in photography with an emphasis on contemporary portraiture.  Her work is profoundly influenced by her cultural background and how culture regards feminine identity.  Working predominately in portraiture, her work deals with an exploration of identity, self-image and gender roes influenced by her personal upbringing and expectations imposed from contemporary media. Using photography and video, Moussawel also explores the nature of memory and nostalgia, while making observations about the everyday.  Ania received her BFA in photography from Barry University in Miami Shores and is currently pursuing an MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York and lived between Miami and New York.
